Where alpine mountains, arid desert and the Great Salt Lake meet, you’re sure to find adventure. Salt Lake City is a modern city full of modern amenities. Surrounded by breathtaking views, unique wildlife, one-of-a-kind lakes, winding rivers and extraordinary experiences, it’s the perfect destination for your next kayaking trip.

Best Places to Paddle in Salt Lake City

From calm and serene lakes to challenging rapid filled rivers, here are a few of the best places to kayak in and around Salt Lake City.

Little Dell Reservoir

Salt Lake City, UT

Little Dell is a quiet little reservoir about 20 minutes from Salt Lake City. It’s located in the Parleys Canyon and surrounded by mountains. The reservoir has lots of areas to explore on your kayak or canoe. Since Little Dell is usually not very busy, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for spotting wildlife as well.

Antelope Island State Park

Davis County, UT

The Great Salt Lake offers an incredibly unique experience for paddlers, but with it being so big there is a lot to explore. Antelope Island is a favorite. It is the largest island within Great Salt Lake, even though it is more of a peninsula when waters are low. The views of the lake and island are spectacular and there’s a lot of open water to explore. The island is also home to free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, antelope and millions of birds.

Weber River

Henefer, UT

Weber River offers up a great 7-mile whitewater run about an hour from Salt Lake City. The river flows between two canyon walls, making for a beautiful paddle. There are plenty of features including the Rock Garden, old bridges (one of which is a little low and you may need to portage), Taggart Falls and plenty of class II-III rapids to keep you entertained on the paddle. It typically takes about two hours.

Silver Lake Flat Reservoir

Salt Lake City, UT

Escape civilization and be submerged in nature at Silver Lake Falt Reservoir. Surrounded by green forest and sweeping mountain views, this hidden gem of a kayaking destination is just outside the Salt Lake City metro area. It provides calm and relaxing paddle, scenic views, incredible fishing and occasional moose-watching in a secluded setting.

Jordan River

Salt Lake City, UT

The Jordan River is a 51-mile-long river that flows from Utah Lake to Great Salt Lake, and it provides some excellent paddling along the way. There are long stretches that are perfect for kayaking, canoeing and even SUPs. The river flows through the Salt Lake Valley, winding past urban centers, resting spots for migratory birds, and stunning mountain views.
