Poly Kayak Racks are proudly made from recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene). The majority of which comes from milk jugs. If you are wondering how a milk jug can support a kayak, you are not alone. Let’s take a look at the process of turning a plastic milk jug into something else.

Recycling Milk Jugs

The plastic used in milk jugs is one of the most desirable plastics for recyclers. It’s a lightweight, sturdy plastic called high-density polyethylene or HDPE. It is very versatile and easy to recycle. In fact, it can be recycled 7 times and can be used for a wide range of things from kid toys to durable outdoor furniture, like our Poly Kayak Racks. The process is pretty simple, but unfortunately, fewer than 3 in 10 milk jugs actually get recycled.

As the consumer, all you need to do is:

  1. Pour out any remaining milk
  2. Rise the jug with water
  3. Put the cap back on
  4. Send it to the curb to be recycled

Once the milk jug reaches the recycling facility, the process of turning a milk jug into something else begins.

How HDPE Plastic is Recycled

Sorted By Type

First, it’s sorted with other HDPE materials, baled and sold to a private company, known as a reclaimer.

Shredded & Cleaned

Here the plastic will be shredded into small flakes, cleaned and further sorted by color.

Pelletized

The sorted flakes are then melted and pushed through a machine called an extruder and formed into pellets.

Sheets & Boards are Formed

The pellets are then processed into large sheets, boards and other sized materials to be made into something else, like our Poly Kayak Racks.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle with Poly Kayak Rack

As much as we love nature, it’s only right we do our part to preserve it. Poly Kayak Racks are an attractive, eco-friendly option for storing kayaks and standup paddle boards. The poly lumber we use for our storage racks is manufactured in Wisconsin and is made from over 90% recycled HDPE. The poly lumber can also be recycled when you are done with your kayak rack.
